New Vid (Six Feet Under) - Happy Frappy
Jul. 31st, 2004 01:00 amOh, to vid the impossible show vid.
Cut for whinage.
So I'm finally branching out from vidding only QaF. I'd wanted to for quite some time, but those pretty, pretty boys... They're just so fun and drama-queeny and familiar, that I couldn't get away. Plus, I was being a big baby about taking on new source material.
But I got over myself and went through with this one (even though, OMG, the episodes have titles ::whimper::). SFU is a fabulous show. Multi-dimensional, thoughtful, keeps you guessing. I love it very, very much. But from a vidding perspective, it is so visually flat. If you know the Fishers at all, they are the most "
" people ever. It's supposed to be drama contained in silence and all that good stuff. Brilliant, but kind of not really viddable. They're all, "I'm so in love I'm floating!
", "I'm having a panic attack!
", or "I want to kill myself!
" (well this last one actually makes sense). Point is, all those domestic, talking scenes? Where they could be feeling so much anger or so much love and looking the same? Drove me *crazy*. You know how in QaF, Justin would make these adorable funny faces and parallel body movements 15 episodes apart without you even asking? And how some of these parallel movements are horizontal (or perpendicular! hee) and with Brian all sweaty and just GUH? Hmm. Anyway, I'm lucky if in SFU, Nate even bats an eye when facing life-changing moment. (OMG what if this vid looks like a slideshow?!)
::exhales and lets go slowly::
Okay, it wasn't really that bad. At least SFU has those chilly white fades that make you feel all chilly and white. And look, Nate stares into space! Did you see?!? That stare is saying "Oh fuck. What the hell am I doing pretending to be happy living this life that is not me??"
Trust me, it is.
So I went with it anyway, and finished Happy Frappy (Guster! \:D/). It's mostly Season 3 Nate (though it goes up to 406--or whatever the heck the episode is titled), because I was bothered by his situation and wanted to capture it.
Anyway, enough with theblaming source for own lack of skill ranting and the excuses babbling and the pointless justifications rambling.
Here is Happy Frappy (wmv, 18.8 MB, right-click), a.k.a. The Vid That Has No Audience, since
mi_nion is the only SFU fan I know who reads my journal, and for whom I am grateful. Thanks for answering my questions, A.
Also, let it be known that
kitkatbyte is just as wonderfully awesome when forced to beta in the dark. It's the sunglasses, I tell you.
Happy Frappy - Guster
Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes I'm too scared to even try
Hashing through the possibilities
They seem as endless as the sky
You seek the truth and the quiet breeze
But the air is too thin to reply
Well I know that's where I'll never be
'Cause I can see the summer's done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all
Distant notions of subtle residue
Cling to minds from our past
Tell us what is what and who made who
But time's events move us too fast
Simple sentiments whisked away by anxious steel wool
Struggling to content ourselves with what we think best
That what makes happy of which we seem never full
Is actually more than plenty for it is already possessed
Well I know that's where I'll never be
'Cause I can see the summer's done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all
Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes I'm too scared to even try
Ultra confusion feigns clarity
Scattered delusions excuses destiny
It's never exactly how it appears to be
It's too much for any of us who even try, try to see
Well I know that's where I'll never be
'Cause I can see the summer's done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all
And with that I ponder my next masochistic VIP of choice. Whee!

Date: 2004-07-31 06:32 am (UTC)And I know how hard it is to branch into a new fandom. I could barely start my Firefly vid after making all Buffy. It was nerve-wracking, I had no idea where anything was or how to use the source or anything. But it's a lot of fun to have that change, too. Gonna go watch and comment again later. :)

Date: 2004-07-31 06:54 am (UTC)Same here. It's a great big world out there!
Thanks for checking it out. Nothing exciting with the editing, though. The new source was the thing to deal with this time. I tend to have a simple style in general anyways (which is why I totally related to your "effects" post!). But I can tell you what happens if you're curious about storyline.

Date: 2004-07-31 07:03 am (UTC)I totally relate to having trouble jumping into a new fandom. My first vidding fandom was The X Files - I was in it exclusively for two years before I moved into BtVS, and it was *nerve wracking.* I was terrified I was going to make something that insulted the entire fandom, lol.
I'm in the process of making a Smallville video for the first time right now...and new fandoms are still scary as ever. *g* In particular because I've seen maybe 6 episodes of Smallville, so I'm crash-coursing in SV canon while I'm at it. So yes. End of babble, but I feel your pain.

Date: 2004-07-31 07:22 am (UTC)The quirky thing is something I have never tried before, and I'm glad it worked for you. The death year fading out is from the show, and it's supposed to happen just after the scene where he opens his own coffin, since it's saying that he basically survived brain surgery and is waking up. But his life after that is filled with a lot of not knowing what he wants and being trapped in something that's not him. I guess putting it at the end is my way of saying that at the end of the narrative, as he starts to let go and is back to being himself, he comes back to life.
It's an awesome show. And there are no SFU vids, Linzee. We need you!
I was terrified I was going to make something that insulted the entire fandom, lol.
*So* me. Right now I am all, um can I just keep this to myself? Especially since the show is all deep and metaphorical and all that. What if I'm way off? Scary.
I love reading posts on your SV vidding. ::waves pompoms:: You can do it!

Date: 2004-07-31 12:16 pm (UTC)OMG thanks you sooo much! I loved that. You captured the Nate-ness. The song fit perfectly. May I share this?
And with that I ponder my next masochistic VIP of choice. Whee!
How about a David & Keith vid? After watching QaF it's hard to see a couple who barely manage to show affection for each other. But there area few moments that I would love to see vidded(is that a word?) together.

Date: 2004-07-31 02:54 pm (UTC)I have, indeed, considered vidding D/K (is it the right abbreviation?--see, I really don't know these things), or Claire! We'll see if I find the song and momentum. But I'm most definitely becoming a bigger SFU fan each day.
*hugs back*!

Date: 2004-08-01 05:39 pm (UTC)I love Guster and when I read that you chose one of their songs to underline the vid, I just knew it would be brilliant. :) The lyrics fit so perfectly and the way you took different scenes and put them together, is amazing too. It all makes so much sense.
I hope you'll continue to make SFU vids. :)

Date: 2004-08-12 02:51 am (UTC)I'm a SFU fan, but I haven't seen S2 yet. Of course, since I've seen everything else, I'm pretty well spoiled for S2. I can see what you say about this being hard to vid, but the visuals are just beautiful on this show, and you captured poor Nate really well. There is a lot in their faces, and you showed it here.
Any chance of a David/Keith vid?
