New Vid: You Were The Last High

kitkatbyte and I finally have our vid ready! The song is "You Were The Last High" by The Dandy Warhols. It's B/J, but more of a Brian character study than anything else. This vid is special to us because it's unlike the ones we've done before, both conceptually and in terms of editing style. We hope it means we're growing :) Sorta :-S

Date: 2004-06-05 04:52 am (UTC)OK - first, as I've mentioned, this is one of my absolute favouritest songs, like whoa. So this was an absolute pleasure to watch.
Bits:
-The transitions were superlative - the intercuts, the fades (you know what I'm talking about, I'm not down with the lingo yet)... GORGEOUS.
-Poor Brian - whoring himself, and looking wistfully at himself in the mirror. *sniffle*
-Very clever the way you edited it so that it looked like Justin was playing off of Brian's acknowledgement of the trick at the diner, which then segued into the whole Justin/Ethan vomit-fest, and how that was intercut with Brian fucking the pain away. :((
-The "..all of the things you shouldn't say" was used perfectly with the S3 angst. :(
-S4 CLIPS!! LEMME SAY THAT AGAIN - S4 CLIPS!!! *DANCES*
-And OMG, poor Brian, all alone again at the end, still whoring himself.
-And last, but certainly not least - THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GRATUITOUS GALE-TORSO. I AM IN HEAVEN.

Once again, you caught my favorite section. And we thought your "fucking the pain away" interpretation is interesting! The way I looked at it was, "Look what Justin is doing while you're tricking, Brian!", or, in Wendy's words, "It's like Brian's too busy tricking to stop Justin."

Wendy was thinking it might be his last trick, but I was just saying that I think it's more like, tricking will always go on for Brian, but Justin's his real high. In a superficial way, it's kinda like how Justin kept on going at the end of Elevation.

Date: 2004-06-05 05:45 am (UTC)You know, I was just thinking about that. If you just take the 'vid' as the context, it looks like Brian's just back to his old ways at the end. But of course if you know the show, you know that this may be the beginning of the end for Brian and his endless tricking and whoring and being adored (by everyone that's not Justin of course). Very interesting.
And yes, the fact that Justin was, is, and probably always will be Brian's 'real' high, was very clear - from even the very beginning, with the shot of Brian watching Justin drive away, remembering their kiss in the jeep.

Dude - you know that in my widdle brain, EVERYTHING is about the B/J, so of course I would interpret it that way, even though you didn't actually choose clips from after Justin had left him. Still, to me, he looked like he was just fucking himself into oblivion, to hide the hurt. :"> But I can see it your way too. :)

Yeah, this flowy, more atmosphere-y feel is most of the new editing style I mentioned, which was quite challenging at first.
The song is great too. However, it's one of those vids that any good song could go with

NO, really, I loved it !! It was a beautiful journey thru the seasons.
It still amazes me how different Brian/Gale looks as the seasons and years pass. His Brian character and the way he plays him changes thu the seasons and his performance is just amazing. And I can see how Gale has aged over the past 4 years since we first *met* him. In season 1 he looks soooo young.. Randy has aged a little, not much.. Hal and the others look the same to me...
okay ,enough of that... THE VID IS GREAT.
I needed this fix. I'm feeling sort of stale about the show and I don't know why.. I'm sure that I'll get over it.. LOL

I know fanfic writers and vidders are sensitive about their work being compared to that of others' but I'm not sure how else to describe the style other than to say that it reminded me of the vids I came across awhile back on choimimi's site with its almost impressionistic vision, although comparatively speaking, I found yours to be much more emotionally engaging. Which again, for me, is one of the more difficult points in successfully managing this vid style. It has to succeed in conjuring up a distinct impression via weaving imagery without distracting because otherwise the viewer will automatically feel themselves tugged out of the viewing experience, oohing and ahhing at the visual effects instead of feeling its emotion.
